Joey G. Dauben's Reading List

Some have asked where they should start to become more informed of what's going on locally, or even who their elected officials are. I've compiled a reading list that I tend to each day, and have been since I was 13-years-old, starting with newspapers...

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but if you want to know where I get my stuff, and how I "know so much," these publications and other sources will put you on track to know what's going on in the world...or in our state, or our nation:
The Foundational Stuff

The Dallas Morning News | I've been reading this paper daily since I was 13.

The Economist | The best publication ever produced for current events.

WND.com | The best independent, conservative source for national events.

Infowars.com | This site will give you everything else you won't find anywhere.

Texas Tribune | A very thorough state-level news Web site.

Burnt Orange Report | The most liberal blog in Texas.

Politico.com | My favorite national political Web site.

Independent Political Report | Nation's largest third-party/indy news Web site.
The Nerdy Stuff

The Economist | It's worth repeating this important source of information.

Wall Street Journal | The WSJ is to the U.S. what The Economist is to the world.

New York Times | The most liberal paper in America. You learn a lot by reading opposing views.

Time | The best news photographs ever put on paper.

Reason | Why do conservatives believe a certain way? Because of reason Magazine.

NPR | I threw away Glenn Beck's show after his Debra Medina hit job and switched to NPR.

KLIF 570 AM | The best local radio station in Dallas/Fort Worth by far.
The Local Stuff

Gromer Jeffers | Every Wednesday, the Dallas Morning News columnist covers local politics. If you don't read him, you don't know what's going on.

Dallas Observer | The mix of local music and local alternative news (i.e., the stuff the Dallas Morning News won't print) is great. The Dallas Observer inspired me to create newspaper rivalries and attack - publicly - other publications and journalists who fall short. The Ellis County Observer gets its name and font style from the DO.

Waxahachie Daily Light | Benjamin Franklin said read your enemy newspapers more than your own.

Ennis Daily News | See above. (Though the EDN has in the past referred people to my blog on things...which I appreciate greatly)

Bud Kennedy | The Star-Telegram coumnist is funny, engaging and writes about local politics.

Corsicana Daily Sun | See WDL/EDN

Navarro County Times | The Suburban | Midlothian Mirror | Red Oak Record | The Ellis County Press
(all local papers that I read...just to get a comprehensive view of what's going on)

The Nuts & Bolts

Who is your elected official? You have many sources to find this out:

EllisCountyInfo.com
co.ellis.tx.us - County Elected Officials
house.state.tx.us - Texas House (150 members)
senate.state.tx.us - Texas Senate (31 members)
texas.gov - the rest

The Most Important Branch of All Man-Led Government

courts.state.tx.us

Specifically, check with the Tenth Court of Appeals in Waco. Ellis County is in the Tenth Court of Appeals (where appeals from district courts wind up.)
As you can see, a lot of my information and reading material is from "the opposition," or from extremely liberal sources. Or extreme sources. I want to know what's going on in the world, and this list (it continues to grow) is a very good start of where I begin each day...

-Joey
