Two high school seniors last week were told that if they didn't shave small amounts of facial hair, they would be barred from walking across the stage to receive their diploma...there was a discussion about this on last night's EllisCountyRadio.com broadcast (daily broadcasts at 9:30 p.m., CST, seven days a week), so check there for more details: elliscountyradio.com
I have mentioned lately that a bunch of stupid commies are making the rules around here????!!!!?!?!!??
ResponderEliminarWe just got the rules for Senior Pictures, No facial hair ( I assume only applies to males ), guys can't wear as much jewelery as females. Hair length is governed, for guys, of course.
ResponderEliminarIf would be nice to hear the reasoning. Hopefully something beyond "because we said so". Or some attempt to 'prepare them for the future', a future of not making waves. Have you looked around at this country lately, we are in serious need of some big waves.
We want our students to use their thinking minds and be individuals, as long as it still fits the mold."
Maybe one of the students will venture beyond the hive mind to challenge them. Not get a diploma and then get a lawyer. Surely we have some up and coming students headed for law school that would be a shoe-in with some publicity like this.
Too bad we have not progressed beyond when I was in High School (70's), long hair was bad then. It's amazing how far we haven't come.
An I spelled my own name wrong in the last comment. Sorry for that
ResponderEliminarMaybe it's because I have too much facial hair... :P
Hair is evil. Hair means that they must be unintelligent. Hair looks ugly. Hair is rough. Hair is a subtle way of insult. In Zimbabwe Hair is a sign of Satan. Hair is Hair.
ResponderEliminar...of course.
Reasoning here? Other than "feel-good tradition" or "perspective on what is insulting"?
It's really not the rule itself which bothers me, but the principle of it.
(Pretty much everything John said)
It makes me want to vomit...If I went to school there and I was graduating with these guys I would make my self vomit right when my diploma is handed to me...right on the school Principal while he hands me my diploma. ANd then I would scream POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!! ESPECIALLY THE HAIRY PEOPLE!!!!
ResponderEliminarThis is exactly why our schools are in such shambles. The kids can't think right for the parents acting like complete idiots. Is that two weeks worth of facial hair worth more than a diploma. Are we to forgo any and all rules and live like heathens to do whatever, whenever we like. These are STUDENTS, most under 18, not ready for prime time. If parents can't live by rules, how are the kids in school going to.
ResponderEliminarThen you wonder why the kids are so wild and dis-respectful. I guess the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree.
If we can tell those 18-year-olds to enlist in our undeclared, unnecessary wars as soon as they grab that diploma, then by god they should be able to smoke, smoke pot, drink alcoholic beverages and wear what they want.
ResponderEliminarThen again, when you send your kids to government-run schools, they will learn to be what the government wants them to be.
So the moral of the story is, if you don't want the government telling you what to do, why would you allow them to tell your kids what to do and then get angry about it?
This is not the govt. IDIOT. It is a school board trying to teach your kids a little respect and how to cope with life after school. So, in your world, let's just give them all the knives and guns they need, include whatever drugs they like, and let them do whatever. The moral of this story is, you have no idea. Secondly, no one is telling kids to enlist in any undeclared war. Obviously, these 18 year old kids that enlist in the military have more of a grasp on life than you do. What a waste of space.
ResponderEliminarcharlotted:
ResponderEliminarBut who defines "Respect"? So if someone says that wearing a ring on my pinky finger shows disrespect then that automatically means it's disrespectful? Same goes for having a beard.
Parents go on and on about how exasperated they are about Fashions and such, but to take the opposite tact of "this IS disrespectful!" is not helping either.
I ask this again.
What is disrespectful about having a beard?
(I can't believe I'm actually having to ask this...)
I'll leave Alex's question of "Respect" alone and instead focus on what's really at stake:
ResponderEliminarSchool Policies that parents and students had to agree to.
These are the strings that were attached with that education.
The funny part is...... skip the graduation and leave the diploma on the desk. The colleges are mostly interested in your TRANSCRIPT, grades, and SAT scores. Go ahead tell them you declined to accept the diploma because you liked your beard. I bet a few colleges would admit you on that alone. ;)
I'm all for ditching rules, and as Mark Twain said: i never let my schooling get in the way of my education.
Once Upon a time, Charlotted was a retard....The End. That was actually the whole story from the time it began till the time the story ended, she never changed.
ResponderEliminarThe beard is not disrespectful. Not obeying the rules is. Students wait 12 years to walk up to the stage and get that hard earned diploma. They can't wait two weeks or whatever it takes to grow that beard. How sad you don't know what respect is. Obviously, this isn't taught or expressed in school anymore. Even parents don't get it, thus these comments leading to such arduous lifestyles.
ResponderEliminarThe facial hair issue in Midlothian is humorous/enraging to many parents and some teachers because facial hair is outlawed for male students, yet the administrator that handles dress code (Mr. Kindred) sports a rather hefty goatee. I don't understand the logic on that one.
ResponderEliminarWhat is not logical (to me) is that you expect students to adhere to the same rules as the cadre. Even college students, although they have a tremendous latitude, still have certain rules they must abide by. Are rules not in your vocabulary?
ResponderEliminarAs for that military observation earlier, I have yet to see a basic trainee with a goatee.
My only point is that there are certain rules that students must and should abide by. If you don't like the rules, there are ways to change or modify them, but certainly not by discrediting the school system. I have no clue who these school administrators are, but I am sure there are reasons for these rules. You might try finding that out instead of calling everyone retarded and stupid commies.
The reasoning would be exactly what someone stated, "a preparation for the future". No matter who these individuals work for, there will be rules to follow. If you don't learn to abide in school, then when, prison?
To Alex: There is nothing disrespectful about sporting a beard. It's not listening to the rules that govern that beard. If students don't respect the teachers they study under for 13 years, who are they going to respect when out on their own?
ResponderEliminarMost people are more willing to sacrifice some of their rights in the name of safety.
ResponderEliminarThen they deserve neither safety nor liberty...
This all goes back to government-run schools...and parents who send their children to be taught by the government. The government will control and dictate what they do or wear, so that's not a surprise.
